Project Back Yard

I wasn’t going to do this. I promised myself I’d do the front yard first, and wait with the back yard till next year. So much for my promises to myself. I must be a glutton for punishment.

Last summer our back yard looked like this.

It wasn’t too bad – mostly thanks to the neighbours’ vines that cascaded down our fence. But honestly, there’s no way anyone could call this a garden. It’s just a back yard. Fully paved. Tidy. But not pretty.

So today I decided to change that. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’d already decided to change that, but just not yet. I wanted to wait till next year. Turn my boring front yard into a nice, inviting place first, and gain some gardening experience in the process. That seemed like a sensible idea.

I guess emotion won out over good sense, so I got the hubby’s crowbar and set to work pulling out some of the pavers. And then some more. Until the backyard looked like this.

Pretty, huh?

Next, I got me an old duster from the shed and cleared the dirt off the pavers. That took me a good while, but when that was done, I wasn’t nearly finished yet. I had a plan with those pavers. I wanted raised beds for my veggies. And aren’t pavers just perfect for building raised beds?

I thought so.

Unfortunaltely, my walls are too low, so I’m going to need more pavers. Thankfully, I happen to have a back yard full of them, so I guess I’ll be pulling out some more soon. Maybe even tomorrow.
