In my never-ending search for ways to simplify my life, I came across a blog post by this stay at home dad who was taking on the challenge of not buying any new clothes for a year.
Being the weirdo that I am, I was sold. Immediately. I wanted to do that too, so I decided there and then to not buy any new clothes for a year, starting right that moment. Then I thought about it some longer and was thrown right back to planet earth.
Yes, not buying any new clothes for a year sounded great, but what if I needed to replace my undies? Buy them second-hand? I don’t think so. I don’t mind buying second-hand jeans, t-shirts or whatever, but undies? You’ve got to be kidding. There’s no way – and let me repeat that: no way I’m going to do that. So I gave myself a pass for undies.
Then I thought about the new sandals I’d been planning to buy for next summer. These are not just any sandals, but very expensive ones, and unfortunately the only ones I will be able to walk on (even if only for maybe 200 yards!) without being in horrible pain. I cannot buy these shoes second hand, even if I wanted to, which I don’t. It’s bad for your feet to wear shoes that have molded itself after someone else’s feet. I really need those sandals come summer, so I gave myself a pass for those, too.
Other than that, I will allow myself to replace any clothing items I wear out, but I’ll have to buy these second-hand. With some luck, I won’t have to. Most of my clothes are in pretty good condition. Note that I will not allow myself any other second-hand clothes. Just replacements. Yes, I know, I’m being tough on myself here, but I’ve been lenient about the shoes and undies so it evens out.
I’ll be saving so much money. And time. Just think of all the time I won’t have to spend shopping for clothes! I could spend that time reading, or puttering around in my kitchen, or even just hanging out on facebook with my friends. I’m already loving this challenge. But will I still love it when I’m a couple of months – or even just weeks – into it? Only time will tell.
